I Will Never Think of the Trojan Horse the Same Way Again: A Powerful Reframe About Marketing

:) Allow me to explain...I have a powerful visual image in my mind, from my classical homeschool education, of a host of Greek warriors charging out of the belly of a huge wooden horse into the city of Troy.  I can't remember exactly how old I was when I first heard this tale, but I can tell you it blew my mind.I had never thought of anything so strategic before.  I couldn't decide whether to applaud the Greeks or wince in horror for the Trojans.  I'm guessing I did some of both. But, I digress.  I'm not writing today to talk about ancient Greek mythology (though nerd that I am, it's not out of the question), but to tell you of a powerful reframe about marketing that happened for me today when I watched Marie Forleo's 2nd FREE Video Broadcast**.Throughout the video, I had to take furious notes on the changes I will be implementing in my current marketing strategy. For me, the clincher was what Marie called the Trojan Horse Strategy.  This strategy addresses one of the most self-sabotaging things I've ever done when trying to tell others about my awesome ideas!  As the name indicates it involves a little harmless trickery -- essentially helping others get out of their OWN way when reaching for your product/service/idea.  I would try to explain, but I could never do the concept justice the way Marie does in her own words.  If you want to re-imagine the Trojan Horse in your mind's eye, watch the video!I am and always have been marketing averse.  Marketing feels like lying.  Like manipulation.  Like pressuring people.  Like self-promotion.I can think of few things that make me feel yuckier.  The thing is, I hate to be marketed to.  Or, so I've thought. When I was watching Marie's video this morning, she shared a perspective on marketing that she calls "Modern Marketing," and as she explained it I thought about my bestie, Crystal, whom I've mentioned in my blogs before.I love this girl.  I really, really do.  And one of the things I love about her is that she is constantly on the lookout for things that will ease the pain points in my life, things that will make me laugh, or help me reach my goals. When she finds something in that category, she calls me up and tells me about it or sends me a text or email, and sometimes she takes full initiative and mails this useful new find to my house. And I'm realizing that from a Marie Forleo point of view, what my bestie is doing is marketing to me.  She is advocating for my best interests and hooking me up.  And let me say it again, I love her for it.So that's my second big take-away from Marie's "Dirty Little Secret" video. I don't hate marketing. I love marketing. It makes me feel cherished and supported. When it comes from a place of love, concern and authenticity. Now I have a marketing benchmark to aim for in my own business. That alone was so worth the 26 minutes of my time. :)If any of this resonates for you, please do yourself a favor and click HERE now.Whether or not you have an interest in B School, I truly believe this video will help you in the area where you awesome mogul moms reported the greatest difficulty: marketing. Here's to new visual images, new interpretations on old concepts, and new (and defined) benchmarks for marketing your business!  Here's to taking Marketing out of your "frenemy" category and making her your friend!Gratefully,Megan** In a spirit of full disclosure I want you to know that I am an affiliate of Marie Forleo and as such may be paid if you sign up for her programs through my referral.
